| All taxpayers have a set of rights, called the Taxpayer Bill of Rights, passed by Congress. The Taxpayer Bill of Rights preserves the balance between safeguarding the rights of the taxpayers and enabling the Internal Revenue Service to administer the tax laws efficiently, fairly, and with the least amount of burden to the taxpayer. Under the Taxpayer Bill of Rights, you have the right to be represented by someone authorized to practice before the IRS, you have the right to stop any interview with the IRS to consult with a representative, you have all the rights conferred to you under the constitution as a citizen of the US., you have the right to have the process explained to you, you have the right to appeal any decision to a group manager. Further, you have the right to file an appeal and request that appeals review your case. If an IRS employee violates your rights you have the right to sue the IRS in court and be awarded fees for your trouble. You also have the right to audio tape the proceedings. Finally, you have the right to have your rights explained to you by the IRS representative you are working with. | |
